Apple Squares ~ from my Aunt Shirley’s recipe collection

Apple Squares
This old-fashioned layered apple square is a cozy, comforting dessert that brings together tender apples, buttery dough, and a lightly sweet nut topping. The rich dough—made with butter, egg yolks, sour cream, and a hint of lemon—creates soft, cake-like layers that bake beautifully around the apple filling. Thinly sliced apples, cracker crumbs, sugar, lemon zest, and ground nuts come together to create a simple yet flavorful filling that balances sweetness with a bright citrus note.
